How does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis is a trance state, just like a zoom lens on a camera which you access many times a day.  Examples of this are when you are day-dreaming, praying, engrossed in a book or a movie or when you are driving.  Oftentimes when we are driving and we have something on our mind we miss our off-ramp on the highway or arrive at our destination and wonder how did we get here?  In all of these examples of trance we might ask ourselves “Am I unconscious?”, or “Have I lost control”?  The answer, of course, is no.  Hypnosis is simply a state where mind and body are relaxed which gives one access to the subconscious mind.

The state of Hypnosis is a suggestible, open state where your subconscious mind is able to accept new thoughts as a reality.  Not only may hypnosis provide long-lasting results, but it also works in a completely different way than any other self-help techniques.

During your first session with Linda she will spend some time to get to know you in order to help you set some goals for subsequent sessions.  This provides a safe environment where you will be able to discuss any challenges, fears or needs that you have.

After this, Linda will work with you to elicit a relaxed state.  This state is nothing like the type of dazed/crazy state you see on television shows – you will be aware of everything that is being said and of everything happening around you.

Below are some frequently asked questions about hypnosis:-

Does one have to access a deep trance for hypnosis to be successful?

Not at all.  We are all unique and some of us relax easier than others.  We do need to experience some deeper states in order to regress back to our childhood but regression is not always essential to makes changes in how we think, feel and behave.

Because our mind and body are connected we can change our physiology (including the neural pathways of our brain) simply by what we imagine.

You might like to test this;  Close your eyes and remember a time when you had a negative emotion such as anger, fear or hurt.  Take a few moments to go back to that time seeing all the sights that were a part of that experience, hearing the sounds and noticing what you were saying to yourself.  Spend a few minutes playing the movie of that event in your mind and when you are ready, open your eyes coming back into the present moment.  You will have noticed that perhaps your breathing changed, you felt physical sensations in your body and maybe your heart beat changed.  This is because our body doesn’t know the difference between what we imagine and what is actually happening.  

Can the hypnotist make me do something against my will like in the movies?

 A hypnotist doesn’t have any special powers, he or she has been trained to speak to you in a certain way to help you relax and using suggestions and imagery help you to achieve your goal.  Your mind has its natural defences and will always protect itself.  I have many clients see me because they want to perhaps stop smoking or lose weight.  Unless they are motivated and are open to changing their habits then hypnosis alone will not help.
