The Role Of Hypnosis In Healing

Hypnotic trance is a normal, natural state that we move into and out of many times in our daily life. Past disturbing or traumatic events that continue to hurt us can be discharged. Then the energetic arousal no longer affects us.

The role of hypnosis in healing is many faceted. It is a trance state induced through focusing attention in a specific way. Hypnotherapy utilizes this state of absorption to help inner change and physical healing.

People who have experienced guided visualization describe it as being like hypnosis.

We can enter a trance states in a variety of ways, many of which occur spontaneously. Hypnotic trance is a normal, natural state that we move into and out of many times in our daily life.

Any activity that absorbs our attention will induce a trance state. We notice this naturally occurring when we are reading, watching tv, making love, praying, day-dreaming or dancing.

We can be induced into a trance state when somebody else focuses our attention. The words of another person suggesting relaxation can guide us into hypnosis. A pleasurable, comfortable therapeutic trance state is a benefit of relaxation.

When we enter a state of hypnosis we engage the parasympathetic nervous system . Giving rise to the relaxation response. This response works in opposition to the “fight or flight response” . It counteracts the body’s physical and emotional response to stress. We can then return to a calm balanced state. Our heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate are decreased. We will also have less stress hormone levels and muscle tension.

Hypnosis can be experienced to varying depths and is experienced differently from person to person.

We may be so absorbed in our own inner experience that we pay little attention to distractions. Even though while in a state of hypnosis we are aware of what is going on around us.

Trance state give us access to our subconscious mind. It is the storehouse of all our past, experiences of which we are presently unaware. We may be able to recall things and some people may remember events with their senses. These memories are felt and not necessarily accurate.

The unconscious also holds our automatic behaviours as a set of stimulus-response programmes”. They have been derived from our instincts and learned experiences. The unconscious mind is strictly habitual and automatically responds to life’s signals over and over again.

Past disturbing or traumatic events that continue to hurt us can be discharged. Then the energetic arousal no longer affects us.

One of the great strengths of hypnotherapy is that hypnosis is a tool that can be learnt.
