Do you wonder what is stopping you moving forward in your business?No matter how much you keep trying to succeed sometimes it feels you are getting nowhere. You might put it down to bad luck, the economy, Brexit or some other force “out there”.
In some instances, you might lack certain skills and you either need to learn them or pay someone else to perform necessary tasks for you.
But what if the problem isn’t about a lack of skills? That you are getting in the way of yourself because you are procrastinating?
There are many underlying root causes for procrastination, and the specific cause will vary from person to person.
Most people procrastinate because they pursue perfectionism, are fearful of doing badly at the task, or are simply too disorganized with their time and resources
The need to be perfect is often a result of negative messages you received about yourself from authority figures growing up which made you feel ashamed. It can also be that you grew up in a home where making a mistake wasn’t accepted.
Perfectionistic attitudes set in motion a vicious cycle: –
They set unreachable goals
They fail to meet the goals because they are impossible to reach
This leads to a reduction in productivity and effectiveness
The constant failure leads a person to be self-critical and self-blaming which leads to lower self-esteem and can lead to anxiety and depression.
The largest disorganization issue is properly prioritizing tasks. Most people who procrastinate tend to tackle the easiest tasks first, regardless of whether they are urgent. More urgent or difficult tasks, however, begin to pile up as they are put off. This leads to stress!
Distortion in thinking
- A person overestimates the amount of time left to perform a task and underestimates the amount of time required to complete it
- A person overestimates the amount of motivation they’ll have in the future (often believing they will be more motivated to do the task in the future)
- A person believes that they need to be in the right mood to be successful in completing the task and that, if they’re not in the right mood, they won’t be very successful at the task
Fear stops you taking risks and causes you to play it safe because making a mistake will only confirm that you are not good enough. As we have seen, perfectionism is caused by events or patterning from our past and can lead to stress, anxiety and depression.
Procrastination is something we do to protect ourselves. It is, however, a short-term gain with long-term consequences which causes us a great deal of stress.
If we are to be successful in our lives and to build a thriving business, we need to have strategies to eliminate stress so that we can perform optimally. Some stressors are things over which we have no control such as the government, traffic, rude people. Other stressors are us – the way we think and behave. It takes mental toughness to do what we are uncomfortable doing so that we can build a thriving business. Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
